Vocal Stretching
Protect your voice! Effective advocacy requires strong verbal communication throughout the day. We can learn proper vocal cord care from the singers, debaters, and broadcasters in our lives.
Everyday Strategies
Stay hydrated with water and warm herbal teas.
Maintain appropriately humid conditions.
Avoid irritants (e.g., smoke) and dehydrating substances.
Stay attuned to your voice and rest if needed. Avoid straining if your vocal cords need a break.
Consider working with a vocal coach to learn to speak using your diaphragm and body as opposed to speaking from your throat.
Vocal Warmups and Cooldowns
Take a moment before and after a long speaking session to prepare your body and your voice and help maintain your vocal health and prevent injury or strain.
Incorporate bodily stretching as well; vocal health depends on a strong and flexible body.
“Elephants are in essence elegant engines.” Simple warmups from NPR.
More involved exercises from Dr. Linda Carroll (Backstage) and School of Rock. These are geared towards singers, but are easily adapted.
